Q. Worth, who acted with much efficiency in the same capaci ty some years ago. Change in Business. By refer ence to our advertising column?, it will be seen that Messrs. B. G. and D. O. Worth have formed a copartnership for the purpose of ' continuing the general commission and shipping business. The first named gentleman was formerly con nected with the firm, but has been doing business for the last three years in New York, and now brings the benefit of his ex perience in that great commercial metro polis of the Union to the assistance ol the new firm of Worth & Worth. 9Atlthe latest styles of Millinery, at the lowest price, by Mrs. St rock, at Flshblate & Brothers, M Market street. t Another Cocored Artist. The presence of the Cuba in our waters is hav insr the tendency to develope artistic skill among oar colored men., James II. Hamas, one of our colored policemen, brought to our. office - yesterday, a (.ketch he had made with a pencil ot the above vessel,'which is very creditablv, and shows, as did that of Hill, mentioned in our last, that the proper cultivation of his genius tor drawing is all that is needed to- make him a very good artist. Astronomical. The planets Venus and Saturn are now apparently ap proaching each other. The least distance will be reached about quarter-past eight o'clock on the evening of the 25th instant, when Venus will he 8$ degrees South ot Sal urn. Tbey will then be two hours fifty minutes beyond the sun, and visible in the Southwestern part of the heavens tor some time after sunset. Saturn is now commencing to move forward slowly.' He has been for some months nearly stationary above the tail of Scorpio, and about midway between Antares and Eta OphincL . Masonic Notice. The mem bers of St. John's Lodge P.' & A. M., of this city, are notified to meet at their Hall at 3 P. M. this day, to attend the funeral of Mr. George Gardner. Mr. Gardner was formerly a citizen ot Wilmington, and a son ot Mr. Junius D. Gardner of this place, but resided at the time ol his death in Wenona. Miss. His remains arrived in this city last night, and will be interred in Oakdale Cemetery. Arrested. A telegraphic dis- latch was received in this city from the Chief of the Detective force in Charles ton, representing that two white men by the names of W. B. Westlake and J. Burg- man, charged with1 forgery, larceny and swindling genera'ly, had left thacity nd would probably make their way in this direction, and requesting their arrest. Accordingly a competent force was sent to the depot Sunday night, and on the arrival of the Southern train the two worthies mentioned were discovered to be among' the passengers and immediately ta ken into custody. They were taken before Judge Cantwell, of the Specisl Court, yesterday, but it was finally decided to postpone their examination until this morning.'" The Contempt Case. The case of Cantwell w. Neff, for contempt pi Court, on an application for a discharge of the defendant under the writ of habeas corpus issued by Judge Russell on Satur day last, was resumed last night The case was ably argued by Mr. M. Tendon an d Jndce Person, the counsel for the defendant, who ' denied' the juris diction of Judge Cant well's Court of tue offence of contempt ; declared there was no Court in. session . at the time the a! leged contempt 'Was committed ; that nothing was .done to interfere with the business of the" Court, ' &c, &c. Nu merous authorities were adduced to prove the correctness of the grounds taken by the defence-why the defendant should' be discharged under the writ. At the con clusion of Judge Person's argument, Judge Russell announced that he would reserve his decision until he should have had an opportunity to examine into the f authorities referred to by counsel. Mayor Netf in the meantime being recognized to appear from day to day until His - Honor shall render his decision. WnHETGTOtf, N. . An Accident. A Mr, Melton, in the employ of the street railway com pany, met with a serious accident between 4c and 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A horse is kept at the foot of the grade on Market street, near the corner of Second, which, when the cars are heavily laden, is hitched in front of the reguiar team for the purpose of assisting in pulling the car up the grade. The horse had . been used lor that purpose just' previous to the accident ; and the boy who usually has charge of him was riding him back, when he became frightened and started off at a fearful speed. Melton, who was some where in the vicinity of the stables on the corner of Ninth and Market streets, saw the horse coming and rushed out with the view of stopping him, when the animal reared up and came down with his fore feet on Mr. M.'s head, cutting a frightful gash in it. Wo understand that the un fortunate man is very seriously but not dangerously wounded.' Superior Court. The Fall term of .the- Superior Court'of New Hanover county, Jndge Russell presiding, com menced in this city yesterday. The following is a list of the Grand Jury drawn for service during the term : Benj. F. Keith, Foreman; Jordan H. Home, Jas. R. Garriss, C. M. McAusten, E. M. Johnson, William Holmes, Jas. W. Johnson, P. C. Colvin, James P. Walker. The following cases came up for trial yesterday : - State c. James S. Cowan, for assault and battery. Dclendent submits. Fined one penny and costs. State e. Toncy Bellamy, for assault and battery. Tried by jury. Verdict guil ty. Judgment suspended on payment of costs. State ca. Henry Hill, for assault and battery. Tried by jury. Verdict guilty. Not sentenced. Two cases of submission were discharge on payment of costs. A First Class Hotel to be Es tablished at Wrightsville Sousd. A number of prominent capitalists of our city propose to organize, at an early day, a joint stock company for the purpose of building a first class Hotel at Wrightsville Sound. The capital stock ot the company will be fixed at $40,000, which will be divided into four hundred shares of $100 each. Of this number, we learn, one hun dred shares have ulrendy been subscribed, and no doubt is entertained that the whole amount will be taken in a very short time. This is certainly a move in the right direction, and one which will eventually prove not only exceedingly profitable in a pecuniary point ot view to the projectors of this enterprise, but will be a great pub lic convenience to the people of this city and throughout the interior of the State. The completion of the Seaside Railway to that point, which in all probability will be consummated by the beginning of next Summer, will render a 'Hotel such as is proposed to be established an absolute necessity, as a perfect rush will commence with the opcoing of the road, of persons desirous of inhaling the sea breezes, bath ing in the. surf, &c. With the railway completed and a good hotel at Wrights ville, there will be no necessity for health and pleasure seekers to go North or any where else beyond the borders of our own State, for the mountains and sea-coast of North Carolinia will then . afford all the facilities required by these classes of our citizens. Another . Postponemfnt of the Cuba Case. The case of the Cuba, in accordance with the continuance asked for by the Counsel for the defence on Sat urday last, was resumed yesterday morn ing, at 10 o'clock, .before Commissioner Rutherford. Mr. Davis, tor the defence, asked that the officers of the Cuba be tried separate ly, stating that their cases could not oth erwise be investigated with that perfect fairness to all concerned which was desira- ble. . .... ; Judge Person, tor the prosecution, con tended that it was not at all necessary to arraign them separately, as this was only a preliminary examination, in which it was merely necessary to show that' a reasona ble belief existed ot their guilt in viola ting the laws of the United States in the manner charged, whenUieir cases would be finally decided before a . higher tribu nal ' "", V ". At this point in the proceedings Mr. Davis arose and stated that he bad just received a telegraphic despatch from Mr. Lowery, ot New" . York, one of the Asso ciate Counsel for the defence, referring to bis unavoidable absence and asking a con tinuance of the case until Thursday. After some discussion between. Counsel, in which the government showed a desire to proceed with the examination, and the defence conterfded that a further continu ance was due them, as the prosecution had already asked for and received two con tinuances, Commissioner Rutherford de: cided to grant the postponement asked lor. Whereupon . the Court adjourned to Thcrsday, at-10 o'clock, -i . . . 7 Bny your Saddlery, Trunks, Saddlery . Hardw are, Harness, Valises and Satchels from J. ,S. Topham & Co., 8 .South Front Street. The 8th Infantry Band is to be present at. and during the tour days of our State Fair. The Sentinel notices a new feature in the programme of the State Fair, namely,, an address by the President, at the opening. This feature has neen in troduced,1 we understand, because the present Fair is the first alter a long in terval, and to give an opportunity to pre sent the present condition and past history of the Society. There is a peculiar pro priety in this arrangement and we think it would be well for the precedent to be followed at future taiis on the occasion of the opening. A gentlemen in Newport, N. C, forwards us $1.50 as a subscription to the Weekly tiun for eighteen months, to be sent to Master Elijah D. Hardesty, of Newport, to whom the subscription has been awarded as a school prize. 2f. T. Sun. The Standard thus remarks on the above paragraph, and with much truth : The idea of making such an award to school children is certainly a new one, but never theless a capital one. Let the example be imitated, liberally, and its effects upon the intelligence of the boys and girls ot North Caiolina, will be very striking; we shall have a class of youth growing up around us thoroughly posted in the cur rent history of the world's action, and this information will be worth as much to them as the ''book learning" which they acquire at school. In suggesting that the papers placed in their hands should be of our own State must not be construed into selfishness. Let the children learn of their home affairs, and while learning this tbey will also obtain the gist of news of other States and foreign countries. We like the idea. The Standard has the follow ing : There is no State south of Mason and Dixons' line, to which attention is more thoroughly drawn, than to the State of North Carolina. In point ol el i mate. and all the elements that eo to make up a desirable country, North Carolina seems to have been purticulary favored; and the researches of our State Geologist devel ope, daily, new attractions. In minerals; we are rich; in wafer, the purest is the free gift of an all wise Providence, to our people wherever located; in timber, no State can produce more, or finer specimens of oak, hickory, black walnut, poplar and ashe. If we have barren lands, we have the marl to make them rich. Then it is not wonderful that the far seeing north ern men, in search of a home in the eunny bouth, should look to jNorth. Carolina in preference to any other State. In addi tion to the advantages already enumerated we have railroad facilities now available and prospective railroads to tap the rich low country and to penetrate the mineral regions.
